Fill it with your personality
Before you go ahead and move into your sunroom, give a thought to how you'll decorate it. If you simply put spare furniture in there, you'll probably never get around to doing the job properly and all that beautiful space with so much decorating potential will go to waste. Considering that it takes at least a couple of weeks to build, you'll have plenty of time to think about what you want to use it for, sit on and do there. Functionality is as necessary as aesthetics and is usually the primary concern.
So what do you want to use your sunroom for?
Surely you will have determined a need before building it so you will have some idea how it will look, even if just in terms of shape and dimension. Now, do you want to relax there, get busy with projects, entertain guests, take afternoon naps, enjoy a sun-drenched breakfast, play cards with friends, keep the kids occupied? Make a list of the ways you would like to use the area and then it will become clearer what you'll need in order to decorate it.
Shop for goodies
Go shopping at some wonderful homewares stores. Some have superb displays that totally inspire you to decorate your sunroom similarly, whereas others will have shelves and shelves of interesting knick-knacks that will give you cool ideas on what to put where. Try to pick a color scheme that you will work with as you shop. It should blend in with the rest of the house so that the sunroom doesn't look like the afterthought that it was!
Special touches
Your new sunroom is as much a part of your home as is your bedroom so look through closets, trunks and drawers for special pieces you may want to put on display. Picture frames, wall hangings, rugs, a unique chair and some unusual candle holders may hold the key to how you decorate your sunroom. You often see on home makeover programs that the designer's ideas will come from one special item such as a family portrait or a souvenir from an overseas trip.
Work from the ground up
Floor coverings are essential and you'll need to decide whether to put down carpets, linoleum, tiles or something else. Then you can work your way up and find furniture to fill the space. Follow that with items to hang on the walls, drapes for the windows - if you like - and then light fittings. Starting from the floor and working your way up is useful because you get a sense of dimension from the use of each thing you add.
No need to do it all at once
A home is something that evolves as your tastes change and your lifestyle develops. You'll delight in adding more ornaments over time, changing the color of the soft furnishings and moving the furniture around. Make it an ongoing project that gives you great pleasure each time you make a change and your sunroom will continue to be a place in your home where your heart truly is.
